The cherry blossoms are officially forecasted to be at peak bloom right now, which means that winter (might?) be over. This also means spring cleaning and checking off that honey-do list will begin to take priority so you can enjoy the good weather when it arrives.
We know our clients are super busy people and often play as hard as they work, therefore, they usually hire out tasks to professionals so they can travel, entertain, or rest on weekends. We’re going to share some quick things you can do on your own with some tips from my pros. If you decide the task is bigger than you thought, you can always call in the professionals!
We are an affiliate of some of the products we’ve listed here and have had great experiences with products from these companies. We hope you will too! Just so you know, we are not compensated by our partners quoted below to be a part of the post. These are truly the best in the business and we’re proud to be able to refer our clients to them.
Jay Davies of Orion Home Improvements (https://www.orionhomeimprovements.com) has been busy taking care of roof damage from the recent windstorm, but he had a few minutes to share his preventative roof-care tips for homeowners:
“Fall is when the leaves drop but they don’t really become a nuisance until the spring rains come. Over the winter, debris can collect in the gutters and cover the drainage for the downspouts. A clogged gutter can wreak havoc on the wood trim of a home. Water can cause problems with the siding or leak into the house around windows or other wall penetrations, or cause damage at the foundation, or even wash away landscaping around the home.
If you are not ready to climb a ladder and check out your gutters yourself you can simply use the garden hose to spray water up onto the roof and wait to see if it begins to drain out of the downspout. Remember to run the water test on all roof slopes that connect to different sections of gutters and downspout drainage. Box stores like Home Depot and Lowes sell attachments for your garden hose that will telescope out and help you get that water up to gutter lines that are two stories.
If you want to bypass all of the hassle of a self check you can always call on the pros here at Orion to service your existing gutters, replace the system or add gutter leaf protection and avoid this worry with a system designed to protect your home and let you focus on all the other good things that springtime brings your way. “
You’ll definitely want to heed Jay’s advice. Putting off a maintenance task like this can snowball into something much bigger and more expensive. If you’re already looking around the outside of your home, you will want to take note of the condition of your siding and if your wooden siding or shutters need a coat of paint.
Dan Derbes of AdvantaClean (https://www.advantaclean.com/location/manassas-va/) is passionate about keeping the indoor air quality (IAQ) of your home really clean. Below he gives us a couple tips and agrees that fresh air is good for you and your home too:
“Spring brings warmer weather that’s perfect for opening up the house and letting fresh air in.
As someone who is concerned about the indoor air quality of your home, I think that opening the windows on a nice day is a great idea.
Your home builds up indoor air pollutants from cooking, cleaning, body odors and sometimes, mold growth. Our energy efficient construction limits the free exchange of air in your home trapping the indoor air pollutants. So open the windows and welcome the fresh air!
Keep your air fresh by changing your air filters in your HVAC system quarterly. With air filters, you definitely get what you pay for. Use high quality, pleated air filters. I recommend filters that will trap allergens such as Filtrete™ Allergen Defense Air Filter in the red wrap at Lowes or the Honeywell FRP 10 also in a red covering at Home Depot.
When was the last time that your air ducts were cleaned? If you can’t remember, then it may be time.
Dryer vents should be cleaned regularly. They should be inspected annually and cleaned before it takes more than one cycle to dry your clothes.”
Good indoor air quality is not only a must for asthmatics and the young or elderly. Everyone wants to breathe good air, so it’s worth it to keep your filters and ducts clean.
Spring is also a great time to do a deep clean on all areas of your home. Pulling up rugs and sending them out to be cleaned will help with your indoor air quality too, especially if you have pets. You may look around and decide you’re a bit disorganized or have too much stuff, so hiring an organizer or junk removal company might be the fastest fix to overloaded closets.
If you look around and realize the furnishings you currently have aren’t suiting your current lifestyle, it may be time for an upgrade. Maybe you’ve got some basics but want to pull in some of the current trends. If you need to open up a space to create a more open floorpan or remodel your existing kitchen, set up an initial consultation with us and we’d be thrilled to help you with the design and management of your project. You can contact us here.
We hope that this little list will help bring you peace of mind in the months to come, and we’d like to extend a warm thank you the above service providers for sharing their expertise!
