We update our clothing per the season, so why not update the decor in our homes as the seasons change? Making small to grand styling choices can enhance the way you feel in your home. This is the time of year when the shifts feel a bit grander with the addition of greenery, wreaths, pretty metallics, and ribbons.

As with fashion, interior styling and décor trends come and go, so you’ll want to make styling selections based on what your interior currently serves and how you want to further enhance it. I’m a fan of working with the colors and textures of the room and the large pieces within the space, rather than jumping on a random trend just because it looks neat in a highly editorialized advertisement shot. It likely won’t feel the same in your space as it does in the curated images online. Often a trend will show up in a multitude of material and color options, so you can give something a try if you think you’ll like it. In this post, I’m sharing three tips to help you simply transition your home’s decor from fall to winter.

As we move from Autumn to Winter, we most obviously see holiday swaps, from rusty orange hand towels to festive red and green ones, which only really works through the first week of January or so. After that, thematic decor seems a bit out of touch. You can begin layering in more wintry themed decor as soon as Thanksgiving is over and layer the holiday decorations over that and then remove once the holidays are over. We like swapping out lighter throws for heavier ones made of wool and we never tire of plaid this time of year. Removing cotton or silk pillow covers and replacing with flannel, wool, or cashmere adds texture and warmth you can feel. Toss the dried fall-themed branches and florals and swap them for holly, berries, or something crystalline.

I always pay particularly close attention to the spaces every guest will likely make their way to. The entry and the powder room. If you only have the time and energy to zsuzsh up one or two spaces in your home, make these the top two. Keep your walkway clear of leaves, ice, and snow to start. Remove any corn stalks, gourds, and other decor. A nice pine or fir wreath is the perfect welcome for winter. Add a simple bow and that’s done. Then swap out your outside front door mat with a simple one that will help knock off anything heavy. Having one inside also will help keep dust, drips, and debris from getting tracked through your home. When the weather calls for snow, I add a boot drip tray to contain the mess (not as decorative, but it helps). Ensure you have open hooks or hangers and room in your coat closet for guests’ coats.
I also update the hand towels in the powder room. We also like swapping out a small rug, wall art or petite accessories.
We experience design through more than just our sight. If you’ve ever walked into a really great hotel lobby or a high-end retailer, they’ve layered the visual aesthetics with scent so you are enveloped fully by the brand. Your sense of smell can trigger a fond memory or enhance an experience. This is what we do when we layer pleasing aromas into a space, and feels especially important in the fall, moving toward winter. I love using candles and diffusers throughout a space to help set the mood, like this one we created just for this time of year!
This time of year can be especially hectic with kids’ schedules, Thanksgiving travel, family, finals, and use it or lose it PTO. If you’re a bit overwhelmed with the season and need some help getting that winter layer styled before you add your own holiday decorations, contact me and we can make a plan to get things installed in short order.
If you’re eager to invite the next season into your home with expert styling, we’ve got your back! Contact us today for a stunning home tomorrow.
