When you decide to work with an interior designer, the consultation is your first step toward transforming your space into something truly exceptional. Yet, many clients feel uncertain or overwhelmed before this initial meeting, unsure of what to expect or how to prepare. As a seasoned interior designer, I believe that a well-prepared consultation sets the tone for a successful project and a rewarding collaboration.

Before the consultation, it’s natural to feel a bit unsure about how to articulate your style preferences or project goals. This is where clarity becomes crucial. A designer’s role is to listen carefully and translate your vision into a cohesive plan, but having a clear sense of your priorities helps us focus our efforts effectively. Whether you’re aiming for a timeless elegance or a modern edge, knowing what matters most to you—be it comfort, functionality, or aesthetic impact—guides every decision.

Clients often wonder if they need to come armed with a Pinterest board or magazine clippings. While inspiration is helpful, it’s not mandatory. What truly matters is sharing what resonates with you, even if it’s just a feeling or a color palette. Bringing any images, fabric swatches, or existing furniture photos can enrich the conversation and provide tangible reference points. This preparation helps ensure we’re aligned from the start.
A common challenge clients face is feeling unprepared about the physical space during the consultation. It’s beneficial to have your space decluttered and accessible (and I truly never judge), allowing for us to walk around each room with a clear view of architectural features. You likely will have questions that came up between our phone call and the appointment, so jot those down as you think of them. We will review timeline, budgetary, and process questions also. This proactive approach fosters transparency and trust.
In every project, certain choices are intentionally simplified or limited to maintain focus and feasibility. For example, while it might be tempting to explore every trend or material option, I often recommend narrowing selections to those that best suit your lifestyle and the home’s character. This tradeoff avoids decision fatigue and keeps the project on track, ensuring a harmonious and practical outcome.

What should I bring to my interior design consultation?
Bring any inspiration images, measurements, and a list of questions or concerns you have about your space or project.
How long does a typical consultation last?
Consultations usually run up to 90 minutes, allowing ample time to discuss your goals and explore ideas.
Will the designer provide a project estimate during the consultation?
Initial estimates can be discussed, but detailed budgets often require further assessment after the consultation. If you would like to download our Kitchen and Bath Budgeter, you can do so here.
