Renovating a home is an exciting journey, but it’s also one that often comes with uncertainty and questions—especially about timing. Many clients come to us with expectations shaped by quick TV show makeovers, only to find that a full gut and remodel project takes considerably longer than the few days or weeks portrayed on screen. Understanding the realistic timeline of a home renovation is essential for a smooth process and a high-quality result.

By the time we meet for the design presentation, we usually have a solid estimate of how long your renovation will take. However, every project carries inherent unknowns. Behind every wall, there could be surprises—electrical wiring that needs rerouting, plumbing adjustments, or HVAC modifications to accommodate the new design. These factors can extend the timeline but are necessary to ensure the integrity and safety of your home.

Several elements influence the duration of a renovation. Material availability is a significant one; we prefer to have all or nearly all materials ordered and delivered before demolition begins. This approach helps keep the schedule tight and avoids unnecessary delays. Unfortunately, delays can occur due to long lead times, customs holds, or damaged shipments requiring replacements. Additionally, change orders—whether client-directed or necessary due to unforeseen conditions—can impact timing. For example, deciding to paint an additional room mid-project adds time but may enhance the final outcome and client happiness.
A renovation typically unfolds in phases: planning, procurement, construction, and installation. Each phase requires careful coordination. Planning sets the foundation with design decisions. Procurement involves ordering and receiving materials. Construction is the hands-on transformation, and installation finalizes the furnishings and styling details. Delays in any phase ripple through the schedule, which is why clear communication and realistic expectations are vital.
We believe transparency is key. When delays arise—often due to discoveries behind walls or material issues—we promptly inform clients. For instance, starting a kitchen renovation in early November with a Thanksgiving deadline is unrealistic for a high-quality result. We advise scheduling projects with sufficient buffer time to accommodate the inevitable surprises and ensure excellence. Additionally, larger projects, like whole home renovations will take longer than say, a small bathroom remodel.

Renovations are complex, but with clear expectations and expert guidance, the process becomes manageable and rewarding. If you’re considering a renovation and want to understand what your timeline might look like, we’re here to help you navigate every step with professionalism and care.
