Welcome back if you are following along! If you are new here, I’ll do a quick re-intro of myself and the project. My name is Emilie Kyle, and I am the Owner and Principal of Lush Interior Design, located in a charming historic townhouse studio in Old Town Alexandria, Virginia. We work on projects that range from furniture projects to kitchen and bathroom projects, to full scale redesign of commercial spaces like condominium buildings and their amenity spaces.
If you missed last week’s post or any future weeks, you can check it out using the previous week’s link above. If you want to see the other designers’ work, click on over to the ORC website to check them out! The new week’s progress will be up every Thursday.
This project is located in a newer neighborhood called Willowsford in Aldie, Virginia. It’s a small powder room that we’re affectionately calling the “builder’s grade upgrade” since everything is original and rather vanilla. But don’t worry, we’re doing a full upgrade of this little space, and we’re in week four!
Before – see? Tiny and plain.
Did you see my Instagram story on Tuesday when I shared the wallcovering sample I received? It only just arrived (just part of the myriad delays we’re all experiencing) and was one of the original options that we didn’t go with. While I’m not typically too surprised about color rendering differences on screen to real samples, I was surprised about this one. One of the colors was actually a metallic copper which was unapparent on my computer screen. While beautiful, it wasn’t the direction we thought we saw on screen. This shows the value of getting real samples of finishes that will be used in any project, large or small!
Metallic – not what we were going for!
I’ve started following along with some of the participants in the One Room Challenge, and realized that some of these designs and implementations were started some time ago. You are getting a look at the progress we’re making on this project in real time. Between last week and this week, I finished up pricing out everything except the wallcovering installation. Today I’m sharing the plans I prepared (not the entire set), so you can see what part of a typical small set looks like.
I combined all plan views of this project on one sheet since it’s so small.
Elevations of each wall
These plans, along with several other sheets are what will be necessary to execute this project!
Don’t forget to see what other designers’ projects are looking like as we move through the challenge. Click over to the link to the main ORC page where you can go see more designers’ work! See you next week!

The lowly powder room can often be overlooked, but because it’s such a small room, it’s really a great opportunity to glam it up or go a little wild on budget here since the volume of materials isn’t that high. Also, just about every guest that visits you will likely make a stop inside. You might as well make it worth it, eh?

The start of 2020 was much like many years, but it was a little different for me because I would be planning our wedding in less than ninety days. We were very excited we nailed down our venue on December 31st, so I knew I’d be hitting the ground running with planning. I took off planning this special event just like I do design projects for my clients.
